Subscriptions on Apple Pay: where they are, and how to stop them
The short answer: Apple Pay is a way of paying, not a place subscriptions live. A subscription you pay with Apple Pay is in one of three places — your Apple Account (if you subscribed inside an app), Wallet → Preauthorized Payments (if the merchant shares it with Wallet), or only with the merchant. And revoking a payment in Wallet doesn't cancel anything.
That's why "how do I cancel a subscription on Apple Pay" has no single answer, and why people end up in forum threads. Here is each place, how to check it on your iPhone, and the one mistake that keeps the charges coming.
1. Subscriptions billed by Apple
Anything you subscribed to inside an app — a streaming service, a game, iCloud+, Apple Music — is billed by Apple to your Apple Account, using whichever card is set as your payment method (often the one in Apple Pay). These are the easiest to find:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your name, then Subscriptions.
- Tap one to see its renewal date, or tap Cancel Subscription. If there's no Cancel button and you see an expiry date, it's already cancelled.
Cancel at least a day before a free trial ends if you don't want it to renew. On a Mac, it's App Store → your name → Account Settings → Subscriptions.
2. Merchants you pay with Apple Pay — Wallet's Preauthorized Payments
When you subscribe on a merchant's own website or app and pay with Apple Pay, the subscription is with them, not Apple. Merchants that share their subscriptions with Wallet appear in a list Apple added for exactly this — covering subscriptions, deferred payments, monthly bills and instalments:
- Open the Wallet app.
- Tap the More button, then Preauthorized Payments.
- Tap a merchant to see the details. Manage with [the merchant] takes you to their site to change or cancel it.
You need the latest version of iOS and to be signed in with your Apple Account.
Revoking is not cancelling. Wallet also offers Revoke Payment Authorization. In Apple's words, when you revoke a payment authorization "you don't cancel your subscription or other associated payments" — Apple only asks the merchant not to charge that Apple Pay payment method again. The agreement still stands, and you can still owe what it says. To be certain you won't be charged, cancel with the merchant.
3. Merchants that don't share with Wallet
Apple notes that the experience is different when a merchant "isn't sharing your subscription information in the Wallet app". Those subscriptions appear in neither list above — which makes them the ones most easily forgotten. The only record is the charge itself:
- Check the statement for the card you use in Apple Pay. Apple Pay payments show on that card's statement under the merchant's name, the same as a card payment. Look for the same merchant charging the same amount every month or year.
- On iPhone, Wallet can show the transactions for an Apple Card, Apple Cash and — in the UK, from iOS 18.4 — many connected bank accounts.
- Or let a tool do the looking. Our free subscription checker scans a statement or your bank's CSV for repeating charges, in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
Don't rely on removing the card
Removing a card from Wallet can feel like the nuclear option, but it isn't a cancellation. It doesn't end your agreement with the merchant, who can still bill you another way for what you owe — and depending on how the merchant set the payment up, it may not stop the charges at all. Cancel with the merchant, then remove the card if you want to.
Keep them all in one place
The awkward truth is that subscriptions paid with Apple Pay are scattered across your Apple Account, Wallet and a dozen merchants' websites — and none of those places adds them up. Outflow keeps every one in a single list on your iPhone, whatever it's billed through: it reminds you before each renewal, finds repeating charges in transactions already on your iPhone through Apple FinanceKit (no bank login), and tells you how each one is actually cancelled. Free for up to five; Pro is a one-time purchase, never a subscription.

Questions people ask
How do I see my subscriptions on Apple Pay?
Check two places: Settings → your name → Subscriptions for anything billed by Apple, and Wallet → More → Preauthorized Payments for merchants that share their subscriptions with Wallet. Anything else is only on your card statement.
How do I stop a recurring payment on Apple Pay?
Cancel the subscription with whoever runs it — Apple (in Settings) or the merchant (Wallet's Manage with link takes you there). Revoking the authorization in Wallet asks the merchant to stop charging that card, but Apple is clear it does not cancel the subscription.
Why isn't a subscription in my Apple subscriptions list?
Because Apple only lists subscriptions it bills. If you signed up on the company's own website — even if you paid with Apple Pay — it's with them. Check Wallet's Preauthorized Payments, then your card statement.
